When I ask the people around me, or when I do my own shopping at the supermarket, I still see far too many people struggling with a paper shopping list. Whether it’s an A4 sheet, a sticky note or the back of an old receipt, paper is still hanging on, despite being so impractical.
A paper list has its strengths. But as soon as you shop for a whole household, its limits show up fast.

Why is the paper list still around?
It’s simple: no internet needed, nothing to install or figure out. It sticks to the fridge, you add what you need when you need it, and you slip it into your pocket before going shopping.
We mostly keep the paper list out of habit. And a habit only changes when the alternative genuinely brings something.
The limits of a paper shopping list
It stays at home
How many times has the list stayed on the fridge while you were at the store? You try to remember it by heart… and come home without the butter.
Only one person can add to it
Your partner notices you’re out of coffee while you’re already on your way? They text you, and the message gets lost between two conversations. A paper list is never up to date for everyone at once.
It isn’t sorted by aisle
On a sheet of paper, items are added in the order you think of them, not in the order of the store. The result: you go back and forth between produce and dairy, and you walk right past something.
You can’t tell what’s already been bought
When two people split the shopping, or one stops at the bakery while the other does the supermarket, the paper list doesn’t say who picked up what. You end up with two packs of pasta… and no laundry detergent.
It disappears after the shopping
Once the shopping is done, the list goes in the trash. The next week, you write the same items again: milk, bread, eggs, toilet paper.
What a shared grocery list app changes
A good shopping list app doesn’t just replace paper: it fixes the problems that come with it.
- It’s always in your pocket, because it’s on your phone.
- Everyone adds their own items, from their own phone, and the list updates in real time for everyone.
- The list is sorted by aisle: you follow the store’s layout instead of zigzagging.
- You see what’s already in the cart, even when several of you are shopping.
- Recurring items don’t get forgotten, thanks to recipes and lists of things to check.
There are apps, though
Between notes apps and shopping list apps, there’s no shortage of choice. But personally, I find there’s always something missing, depending on the app:
- No true real-time sync between phones
- No photo attached to the item
- No spending tracking
- Often an eyesore of an interface, full of ads
I knew we could do better.
Why did I build Listeno?
I designed Listeno to be as simple as a scrap of paper, without its flaws. One list for the whole home, that everyone adds to the moment they think of something, with the photo to go with it. No more "Can you add the Nivea moisturizer to the list? It’s the one with the red lid, don’t get it wrong!"
In practice, Listeno lets you:
- Share a list with your family, your partner or your roommates using an invitation link;
- Sort your items by aisle (dairy, meat and fish, household…);
- Follow the shopping live: every item checked off shows up on every phone;
- Add a recipe’s ingredients in one tap, unchecking what you already have;
- Keep a checklist of the things you don’t buy every week but need to check;
- Split the total: enter the amount at checkout, Listeno works out everyone’s share.
From paper to Listeno in two minutes
- Download Listeno for free on iPhone and Android.
- Create your list: no need to sign up to get started.
- Invite the people you live with using the invitation link (sharing is included in Listeno+, at no cost for the people you invite).
- Add what’s missing, the moment you notice it.
Next time you spot a paper list in a shopping cart, you’ll know there’s a simpler way.
